Injector Cap Nut

An injector cap nut is a precision-threaded fastener used in fuel injection systems to secure the injector nozzle assembly within the injector body. It maintains the sealing pressure necessary for proper fuel atomization and prevents fuel leakage in diesel and gasoline engines. Its integrity is critical for engine performance and emission control.

  • Primary use: Secures injector nozzle to body

  • Common material: High-strength steel or alloy steel

  • Application type: Diesel and gasoline injection systems

  • Function: Ensures pressure seal and nozzle alignment

  • Replacement interval: Typically on injector overhaul or leakage detection

The injector cap nut clamps the injector nozzle holder and sealing washer tightly against the injector body. It is designed to withstand high injection pressures—often exceeding 1,500 bar in modern systems—while maintaining a precise torque specification to avoid thread deformation or nozzle misalignment. A tight fit also ensures that combustion gases and fuel do not escape.

Proper torque and sealing of the cap nut directly affect the spray pattern and combustion efficiency. A loose or damaged nut can lead to poor fuel atomization, loss of power, increased fuel consumption, and excessive smoke. Conversely, overtightening can distort the nozzle seat or cause cracking of the injector components.

During injector servicing, the cap nut is typically replaced or carefully re-torqued following manufacturer specifications. Using the correct tightening sequence and torque prevents leaks and maintains optimal injector performance. Specialized tools are often used to avoid damaging fine threads or internal components during installation.

Cap nuts are commonly machined from tempered alloy steel for durability under extreme thermal and mechanical stress. Some versions are plated or surface-treated to resist corrosion, especially in marine and heavy-duty engine applications. Variants may differ in thread pitch, seat angle, and sealing method depending on injector type and engine manufacturer.
